Telica is a telecommunications solution
company that provides intelligent broadband switching systems for service
providers to deploy highly dependable data and voice services over the
new public network. Telica solutions are designed to help carriers
handle the surge in broadband and narrowband traffic.
Telica engineers integrated the largest capacity FPGA available from Xilinx, the Virtex Series, into the Telica Plexus 9000 next-generation broadband switching system. Specific Virtex devices chosen by Telica include the XCV150, XCV300, and the XCV400E. The ASIC like structures of the Virtex FPGAs provided rapid prototyping, competitive pricing, and a unique package configuration that allows for future growth by providing footprint compatibility. These breakthrough capabilities have helped Telica deliver a highly scalable switching system in an unprecedented timeframe. "Xilinx prowess in programmable logic has given us substantial time-to-market advantages," said Ali Kafel, vice president of marketing at Telica. "Using Virtex FPGAs has satisfied the high-density requirements of our initial customers. We estimate that integrating the Xilinx programmable functionality has shaved several months off our sourcing and build schedule. By leveraging Xilinx programmable logic technology, expertise, and infrastructure, we can ramp production more quickly and deliver high-quality new products to our customers." After successful beta field tests to confirm functionality and reliability of the FPGA in its first release, Telica will continue to use the Xilinx Virtex FPGAs in full manufacturing and production for multiple Plexus 9000 release cycles. "The benefits of this sourcing relationship extend beyond the successful manufacturing and integration of technology," said Joe Quinlivan, Telica’s vice-president of engineering. "The arrangement frees up development time and working capital, allowing us to focus more resource on developing new products and features. This is a tremendous competitive advantage." Telica utilizes several Virtex FPGAs in the Plexus 9000 system Release 2.0. The Telica Plexus system is currently in field test with selected customers and will be generally available in September 2000. Telica solutions introduce a fundamental advantage over piecemeal solutions for the network edge. The company's multiservice broadband switching systems can handle multiple access types in a single footprint, including dial-up, DSL, PBX, and even wireless. Telica has devised a design for industry-leading port density that surpasses competitive products. Telica customers are provided with leading-edge technology resulting in the prevention of bottlenecks, blocked calls, dropped connections, and sluggish response time. The Xilinx Virtex series devices range from 50,000 to 3,200,000 system gates at clock speeds up to 200 MHz and include many new features that address system-level design challenges. Fully supported by the Xilinx software, the Virtex family offers a complete solution for Telica, ready to meet the design challenges for their groundbreaking product. Telica chose the Xilinx Foundation Series Software to simplify the design process and further decrease time-to-market. "The Foundation Series Software provided a ready-to-use solution combined with a powerful interface," said Stephen Caldera, director of hardware engineering. "The software was very fast and efficient and provided us with the ability to iterate new designs very rapidly." Foundation Series software automates the creation of schematic and HDL symbols for inclusion within a design, making it easy to design complex circuits in minutes. "Success stories like our arrangement with Telica clearly further the benefits of integrating programmable logic into the system," said Dennis Segers, senior vice president and general manager of the Advanced Products Group at Xilinx. "As the leading provider of programmable logic solutions, Xilinx anticipates a mutually favourable future with Telica and the development and production of its Plexus system." Telica's Plexus 9000, a carrier-grade edge switching system enables service providers to simplify their network architecture, normalize the switching and transport of voice and data traffic over a unified broadband packet network and enable highly cost-effective switched voice and data service delivery. Telica has received funding from Prism Venture Partners, Highland Capital
Partners, Oak Investment Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners and Nassau
Capital. Redback Networks (NASDAQ: RBAK) added its financial support
on the corporate investment side. The company was founded in 1998 and is
headquartered in Marlboro, MA, with offices in Colorado, Texas, Virginia
and Canada. For more information, visit Telica at |
